Weezer Live In Jakarta, Jan 8, 2013: Review, Videos & Setlist  _WEEZER-WEB-BANNER

The most anticipated concert of early 2013 has arrived. Weezer was very popular in Indonesia back in mid 90’s. They still are. Weezer was the answer for those not really into heavy metal, grunge, hip-hop and other music genre that was big in the 90’s. Pop music with distortion. Love songs with hair-metal riffs. Power-pop, so they say. Some say nerd-rock. Your call. Weezer was an ok sign. It was ok to be a nerd. It was ok if you have a weird hair-do. It was ok if you have moustache. It was ok if you wear a tie to your office and still listen to rock music. It was ok if you wear Buddy Holly (or Woody Allen?) glasses . . It’s ok if you listen to Weezer. If it’s too loud turn it down.

For South East Asia, they only play Jakarta, Indonesia. And then they head to Australia afterwards. The concept was Greatest Hits + Blue Album (From Start To Finish). Man, how can you can skip this golden moment?

Show started at 8pm. The venue was at Lapangan D Senayan. It’s a football court. It was rainy day. But the rain stopped at noon. Few hours before Weezer performed. But the mud remained. But who cares anyway. It’s Weezer. I didn’t give a damn.

They start the show with “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You Too) I Want You Too,” a song off their 2009 album, Raditude. They played the setlist chronologically backward, so they actually skipped an album, 2010’s Hurley. Then they move forward, er, backward to Red Album (2008) with their hits Troublemaker and Pork And Beans. And then to the year 2005, two songs from Make Believe album with Perfect Situation and Beverly Hills. Then  Green Album (2001) with Island in The Sun and Hash Pipe.

And then we went to the 90’s with their cult album, Pinkerton (1996), with Across The Sea, El Schorcho and Tired of Sex. And they took a break to prepare themselves to perform their full album, the masterpiece, Blue Album. As the recess took place, Karl, the unofficial fifth Weezer member narrated a slideshow on the big screen how Weezer was formed until they gained worldwide popularity with their Blue Album.  As Karl finished his documentary, the band hit the stage again. They played the Blue Album in order. From My Name Is Jonas until Only In Dreams. Magical!

Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Killer Crow’ To Complete ‘Basterds’ and ‘Django’ Trilogy?

Iconic post-modern filmmaker Quentin Tarantino incorporated spaghetti western elements throughout his throwback Kung Fu revenge tale Kill Bill, followed by the Nazi-killing adventure Inglourious Basterds. How appropriate, then, that he should go on to create a proper homage to the genre with Django Unchained (read ourreview), which is currently stirring up the pot of controversy over its depiction of slavery and African-American history.

Now, the auteur is planning to round out his historical revenge fantasy trilogy with a final installment that likewise builds on Django by fully saluting the Blaxploitation genre – and incorporates Basterds‘ men-on-a-mission sub-genre inspiration – that could go under the title Killer Crow.

Earlier this month, Tarantino sat down for an interview with The Roots editor-in-chief and professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. Their discussion was focused on Django – including, cinematic traditions it draws from and the film’s depiction of slavery – but it began with the writer-director (and occasional actor) being asked “What’s next on the list of oppressors to off?”

Tarantino offered the following:

I don’t know exactly when I’m going to do it, but there’s something about this that would suggest a trilogy. My original idea for Inglourious Basterds way back when was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been f–ked over by the American military and kind of go apes–t. They basically — the way Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt) and the Basterds are having an “Apache resistance” — [the] black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland.

What’s interesting about this proposition is that such a film would indeed build on the themes of Django, which (in its own Tarantino-esque way) is about the birth of the archetypal Blaxploitation protagonist. Quite literally, as Tarantino revealed at Comic-Con that he imagined the eponymous character (Jamie Foxx) and his wife Broomhilda von Shaft (Kerry Washington) to be John Shaft’s ancestors. Therefore,Killer Crow would explore the next stage in the (pseudo-)history of Blaxploitation cinema, while also bringing things full circle to the WW II setting of Basterds:

So that was always going to be part of it. And I was going to do it as a miniseries, and that was going to be one of the big storylines. When I decided to try to turn it into a movie, that was a section I had to take out to help tame my material. I have most of that written. It’s ready to go; I just have to write the second half of it.

Tarantino added that such a project would be called Killer Crow (“or something like that”) and unfold after the Normandy invasion in 1944, concurrent with Basterds. Moreover, he indicated some of the Basterds could make an appearance since the two stories immediately overlap. Who knows, maybe one of Django’s descendants will be among the character ranks, lending further credence to the popular unified QT universe theory.

Jamie Foxx in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx is ‘Django Unchained’

Django has incited outrage for reasons ranging from the savage nature of its world to its anachronistic mix of elements, be it the soundtrack or visual shout-outs to other films. Of course, the heavy use of racial epithets continues to prompt anger from prominent black artists like Spike Lee (who’s bound to have something to say about QT planning a film about black soldiers in WW II, following his own projectMiracle at St. Anna).

Here’s what Tarantino said, with regard to Django‘s portrayal of history:

Well, you know if you’re going to make a movie about slavery and are taking a 21st-century viewer and putting them in that time period, you’re going to hear some things that are going to be ugly, and you’re going see some things that are going be ugly. That’s just part and parcel of dealing truthfully with this story, with this environment, with this land. Personally, I find [the criticism] ridiculous. Because it would be one thing if people are out there saying, “You use [the n-word] much more excessively in this movie than it was used in 1858 in Mississippi.” Well, nobody’s saying that. And if you’re not saying that, you’re simply saying I should be lying. I should be watering it down. I should be making it more easy to digest.

No, I don’t want it to be easy to digest. I want it to be a big, gigantic boulder, a jagged pill and you have no water.

Indeed, the evolution of that derogatory term (and the culture of discrimination it symbolizes) has been quietly touched upon previously in Tarantino’s Pulp Fictionand Jackie BrownDjango shines an uncomfortable spotlight on the issue that makes it impossible to ignore. Expect Killer Crow to follow that trend – and keep the buzz (good and bad) circling Tarantino’s name once it finally sees the light of day.

For more insight about the research and thought process behind Django Unchained (which is now in theaters), check out The Root‘s full Tarantino interview.

Meanwhile, we’ll keep you posted on Killer Crow as the story develops.

TOP 10 MOST VIEWED YOUTUBE VIDEO IN INDONESIA

1. PSY – GANGNAM STYLE (강남스타일) M/V

I haven’t got the exact number how many really have watched this video here in Indonesia. Bu do we really need it? He’s been all over the place. Around the world. Did the Gangnam Style with Britney and Ellen (Simon Cowell just stood and watched. I knew  he wanted to). Collab with MC Hammer at AMA. Even met The U.N Secretary General (I smell nepotism here). I’m not that surprised if he is voted as Time Person of The Year.

2. Armada – Hargai Aku (more than 9.6 million viewers)

This is a surprise for me. But after i watched the video 27 times (maybe more) now i’m not that surprised anymore. They deserve it. They got all the formulas to be runner up this year. Good song. Easy listening. Soothing voice. Good music video. Suit with their touchy lyrics. Unrequited love. We all love those kind of song. C’mon admit it. Remember Adele?

3. NOAH – SEPARUH AKU (more than 8.3 million viewers)

Their name used to be Peterpan Band. One of the greatest bands in Indonesia for the past five years. This was the most anticipated song of the year in Indonesia. Ariel, the singer, singer-writer and frontman of the band just got released from prison for violating the pornography law. He was the sex idol Indonesia. I think he still is. Not long after that they released this video and boom. They have regained their position one more time.

4. Last Child ft. Giselle – Seluruh Nafas Ini (more than 4.5million viewers)

Formed in 2007. This is their third album. But their first studio album that seriously done. Remastered by Jemi Sitanayah, a Master in Music (Soundengineering) from Berklee College of MusicUSA. This song featuring Giselle, the finalist of Indonesian Idol. She was very well known here Indonesia. Appears almost everyday on local television. Oriental look girl. Boys these days love that kind of look. Look at SNSD and other girlband from Korea and Japan.

5. The Secret State Music – The Biggest Mistake – Official Video

Man, i just heard this band. Where the fuck have i been? Mars? Was i in the wrong direction? After a few of their members served their country, The Secret State has arrived, with their unique electronic tinged sound, to serve their fans. For more info check their website: http://www.thesecretstatemusic.com

6. Trio Macan – Iwak Peyek (more than 3 million viewers)

Trio Macan means Three Lions. No they’re not from England. It’s a group-vocal (or girlband?) Trio Macan are Lia LadystaIva Novanda, dan Dian Aditya. They’re from East Java. Their name skied up high when they released a song called SMS. They’re dyed their hair into blondes. They’re also well known for their energetic stage act and show their sensuality to the audiences. Just like Lady Gaga.

7. Zivilia – Aishiteru 2 (more than 2.6 million viewers)

Their debut album. Zivilia comes from two words “Zif” and “Philia”.  The frontman Zulkifli or you can call him Zul formed the band as soon as he arrived in Indonesia after he got home after quite awhile stay in Japan. Ha! Now we know why the title is Aishiteru.

8. PSY (ft. HYUNA)

Do you still need an explanation?

9. BIGBANG – FANTASTIC BABY M/V

Korean Pop (boyband and girlband) is a big hits in Indonesia. And i think it rules all over the world this year. Everytime they have a show in Indonesia you have to buy the tickets fast. Mostly their tickets were sold out within days.

10.  COBALAH MENGERTI – Ariel, Uki, Lukman, Reza, David Feat.Momo G (more than 1.8 mio)

This is the embryo of NOAH Band (look at number 3). They have to change their name because they had feud with their past members of Peterband. Because the Peterpan name came from Andhika, Peterpan’s keyboardist who left the band with Reza (bassist) and formed another band called The Titans.

Sting: Back To Bass: Live in Jakarta, Dec 15, 2012. Review. Music Videos & Setlist.

by: @agunsux __stingIt was sunny day when i’ve decided to go to Jakarta from Bandung. I had to meet a friend to do some shit related to money at noon. But the most important thing was there are one band and one living legend going to perform at night. The band was Guns And Roses and the singer was Sting. They’re gonna perform at the same night. Different venues. It was a fucked up feeling i get. Till now. I haven’t decided which one to go. I haven’t got the ticket. I didn’t know which one to buy. I’m a go-show gig specialist. I was a big fan of of Guns n’ Roses back in 90’s. But weren’t we all? At the same time i am also a fan of The Police and Sting. I listen to them quite often. Well not that often. _sting2They’re both not at their prime to be honest. But sometimes you have to buy memories to bring it back in mind. They’ve reached their peak at 90’s. Guns and Roses at “Use Your Illusions” and Sting at “Ten Summoner’s Tale” or perhaps “Mercury Falling“. Your call. Or just let your soul guide you, guide your way which one is their peak album. I’ve made up my mind. I decided to go to Guns And Roses gig. I have watched Sting back in ’94. Oh now you can guess my age. Yes you’re a genius. I’m in my late 20’s. But then at noon there was a shocking announcement from local police (Polda). Guns and Roses performance was postponed to Dec 16, 2012 (today) and relocated the Venue to MEIS, Ancol due to safety and bad weather possibilities. I didn’t buy it. I still don’t.  The announcement was too absurd. Something has happened. And i didn’t want to speculate. Well i lied. I did speculate. I still do. I have my own theory. Eager to find out? I’ll let you know. But i have to kill you afterward. Haha! Sting. My second choice moved up to my top priority last night. It was a good concert as always. I haven’t heard Sting dissapointed their audiences at his concert. Have you? The concept was Back To Bass. Just like the day i have watched. Vinnie (my fave) back on drumset. He was the drummer in Ten Summoner’s Tale album. Dominique on guitar is just like Boz to Moz. Dedicated to Sting since the 90’s. There’s a lady (pardon me i don’t know her name) as a back vocalist. She had a bigger role in “Symphonicity” Tour. _sting5I personally wanna see the “Symphonicity” concept. Sit back. Relax. I wanna see Sting as a singer. Not the ex frontman of The Police. The setlist i can assure you more than 70% of them were the same last time i watched in ’94. Added from some tracks from “Mercury Falling” (i was expecting “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot” or “I Was Brought To My Senses”) and “Brand New Day” albums. Bottomline Sting brought back the memories to the audiences. For The Police fans you still enjoyed ten tracks. There were twenty one songs last night. _sting6So now i’m gonna miss Guns And Roses gig today. But that’s ok. I’ll see Rivers Cuomo from Weezer next year in January with my very own eyes. Front row. It’s a promise.. i guess.

Below some videos from last nite gig uploaded by someone dubbed himself as fetboyslim.

Tanpa menafikan nama The Cranberries dan band lainnya.

Mungkin menyamai album Kid A dari Radiohead. Walaupun album favorit saya itu Long Gone Before Daylight.

Tanggal 14 Agustus 2012.

Dari segi tata suara maupun tata cahaya. The Cardigans sangat mempersiapkan dengan baik penampilannya.

  1. Nil Best Of
  2. Encore:
  3. (Premiere: First time since 2006)
