Restructuring specialist Hilco has announced that it has bought 132 HMV shops and all nine branches of its Fopp sister chain.

The deal is expected to be worth £50 million and will save around 2,500 jobs. Hilco already owns HMV Canada, and its chief executive, Paul McGowan, said the company hopes to turn around the fortunes of the UK branches in the same way: “We hope to replicate some of the success we have had in the Canadian market with the HMV Canada business which we acquired almost two years ago and which is now trading strongly.”

HMV – the UK’s last remaining high street music retailer, collapsed in January after several months of financial uncertainty. Documents from administrator Deloitte show that the chain owed £347 million when it failed. The loss includes £237 million owed to unsecured creditors, which Deloitte has said will go unpaid. Despite the deal, 80 HMV stores will remain closed. Hilco is also in negotiations with landlords in Ireland in a bid to re-open stores which were closed several months ago after HMV went into administration.

Tegan & Sara were once heralded for their folky indie-rock sound. But as of late, the twin sisters have become an even bigger mainstream success, riding their self-made wave of 80′s inspired pop-rock-infused love songs. With their latest album Heartthrob taking on even happier synth sounds, unbridled love and sexual overtones, could they be the Vince Clarke and Andy Bell (Erasure) of 2013?

Building a base of real rock fans hit high gear when The Black Keys asked them to open a series of concert dates last October. “This is the thing, people that like licks, also like dance hits,” joked Tegan in an interview. But according to Sara, rock’s not the only genre they’d like to conquer. Although the duo recently collaborated with dance maven David Guetta, Sara said she’d even enjoy working with the masters of metal, Mastadon, proving the girls are truly up for anything.

Discussing the weathered look of the album art, Sara confesses, “I love the idea that we make these albums and that they feel so in the moment and modern and vibrant and relevant and then like in two years, you feel it sort of slip away.”

Heartthrob hits stores tomorrow, January 29th. Listen to the album in its entirety here.

Fucked Up finally got around to making a video for ‘Inside a Frame’ off last year’s ‘David Comes to Life’ album, and it sure was worth the wait. Who knew the frenetic punk stylings of Canada’s hardest Polaris Music Prize-winning hardcore outfit would go so well with the choreographed beauty of a hardcore teen dance troupe? F—ed Up did, that’s who.

Singer Damian Abraham rages on top of the semi-melodic backing music while Destruction Crew or Special Sauce or whatever they are called work out their routine — and the pairing makes you think F—ed Up should soundtrack an episode on the next season of ‘America’s Got Talent’ or something. Although obviously they wouldn’t be allowed to even say their name on the air, so never mind. Hey, it was an amusing thought. (diffuser.fm)
